You are viewing a very unique and rare piece of American music history. Up for sale is a Alcohol Anonymous book (third edition) signed by Stevie Ray Vaughan 12/03/89 at the Oakland Coliseum. Obtained by one of the ushers after the show it comes complete with typed COA. Personalized by Stevie, in a clear reference to staying sober he wrote “Stay in Step Stevie V”. A concert at the Coliseum occurred in December 1989 which featured Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck. I heard of Mr. Santana but had not heard of the other 2 gentleman so I decided to try and find out something about them. I did not find anything interesting about Mr. Beck, however I did discover that Mr. Vaughan had been in alcohol and drug rehab program for a few years before and and had even gone so far as to make his recovery part of his show (I guess that was his way of twelfth stepping). During his portion of the concert , Mr Vaughan played a song (I dont know the name) in which he spoke to the audience. During this part of this song he was making it clear that leading a clean and sober lifestyle was much better than the abusing life style he had been living. I was very moved by what he said and was convinced he was living his program successfully. After his performance, as he walked back stage I went to him and introduced myself as a friend of Bill W. I told him I heard he was in recovery and that I had been sober for 19 years. He was very gracious and talked with me for a short period of time. When we were finished talking , I asked him if he would sign my copy of The Big Book which I handed him. He asked me how I wanted to sign it and I asked him not as an entertainer , but as an AA member. He smiled at me and signed my book. He then handed me the guitar pick he had used while playing that night and shook my hand. I taped the guitar pick on the inside cover of the book. It was a very pleasant and uplifting experience. I was saddened to hear, less than a year later tht Mr. Vaughan was killed in a helecopter crash. I have no doubt that he maintained his program right up until the end. I still refer to that book whenever I hear of an entertainer or a famous person who enters a recovery program or admits a substance abuse problem. It is very comforting to know that one entertainer who lived his program. Founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.
